(1) Outstanding Chinese businessmen of Hong Kong in the early days

Time: 6:30 – 8:00 pm

Venue: Multi-purpose Area & Digital Interactive Lab, 2/F, Main Library & Zoom

Speaker: Prof Lau Chi-pang, Dr Victor Zheng

Description: In Chinese history, it was difficult to gain social status with personal and family reputations through running successful business and attaining wealth. It was even rarer for businessmen to become a legend in their own lifetime. When China entered modern times, the Chinese merchants managed to break the social and cultural constraints of a traditional society in which they were viewed as the lowest within four basic social classes of government official, farmers, workers, and merchants. With their rapid development, the merchant groups have become a strong force in creating prosperity and improving people’s livelihood. Their success has attracted great attention in Chinese and overseas communities. Since the inception of Hong Kong as a port, the Chinese merchants have made brilliant business achievements in different fields and accumulated huge wealth. Focused on the study of this phenomenon, this talk will explore the source of strength that drives Chinese merchants into entrepreneurship and exploration of new opportunities.

(2) Biography: From "Let us now praise famous men"

Date: 27 October 2022 (Thursday)

Time: 6:30 – 8:00 pm

Venue: Multi-purpose Area & Digital Interactive Lab, 2/F, Main Library & Zoom

Speaker: Prof Lau Chi-pang, Dr Victor Zheng

Description: Throughout human history, the records were always about the contributions and achievements of emperors, ministers, generals, and well-known families, but the figures of hard-working people were rarely seen. The latter were lost in the vast history as nobodies, due to the lack of research data over a long period of time.  Even they themselves had little record of their own.

In Hong Kong, whether you want to do a research on social elites or the stories of ordinary families, the problem of lack of information is equally serious.  In spite of this, the local information flow and record preservation system are good enough for making historical discoveries. With devotion to combing through the public and private records or Chinese and Western newspapers, you will always be able to make a difference and discover something that can contribute to filling the gaps of history.  This talk will share some methods, experiences and observations based on research on the biographies of famous people in Hong Kong over a number of years.
